WORLD MAP + CLOCKS

YEAR 12 TECHNOLOGY STUDIES

Following on from my desk in Year 11, I got stuck into designing and constructing this wooden world map and clocks. The design was set up for a large void area in my parent's home that they felt needed a bit more attention. Originally the design was just one large clock, similar to 6 that feature on the finished design, however, finding a clock mechanism that would power such a large clock was hard to find/too expensive.

The world map was hand carved (with a router) into 4mm Ply wood. There are little stops in the carve as to allow the countries to remain attached but still give the outlined effect. The idea to carve the outline was to then allow lights to glow from behind the map at night, emitting the glowing outlines of the continents. As for the clocks, well they are time-zone dependent and have slightly translucent acrylic fronts that also have a light in them that glows through at night. I learnt a lot about woodwork, clock mechanisms and electrical work through the undergoing of this project.
